Did you know that scripture in the Old Testament accurately predicted the year Jesus Christ would be crucified? It’s in Daniel Chapter 9.
Dan 9:24 “Seventy weeks (sevens) are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression (to restrain the punishment), and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.”
I’m focusing on just the timeline here. It has three parts. The one I am going to look at is the 69 weeks.
Dan 9:25 “Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment (decree) to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.”
In 444 BC King Artaxerxes made the decree.
Nehemiah 2: 7-8 “Furthermore I said to the king, If it pleases the king, let letters be given to me for the (A) governors of the region beyond [a] the River, that they must permit me to pass through till I come to Judah, and a letter to Asaph the keeper of the king’s forest, that he must give me timber to make beams for the gates of the [b] citadel which pertains (B) to the [c] temple, for the city wall, and for the house that I will occupy. And the king granted them to me (C) according to the good hand of my God upon me.”
This decree is a historical marker. Not just from biblical documents. I am using 444 BC as the starting point because it is a historically accurate date.
In Dan 9:25 we are given two parts of the timeline.
(25) “Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be (A) seven weeks, and (B) threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.”
These 69 weeks are divided into 2 parts:
(26) “And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.”
A) 7 Weeks
B) 62 Weeks
I’m going to cover B because it tells us when Messiah was “cut-off”. “shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks:” 3 score and 2 weeks is equal to 62 weeks. So according to this verse the time line is 62+7=69 weeks.
In Bible prophecy Each Day in these timelines equals one year. Two verses that define this are:
Numbers 14:34 “After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise.”
Ezekiel 4:6 “And when thou hast accomplished them, lie again on thy right side, and thou shalt bear the iniquity of the house of Judah forty days: I have appointed thee each day for a year.”
Therefore we are looking at 69 weeks here.
69 x 7 = 483 days but since a day = year this is actually 483 years
One more thing. Old Testament Scripture uses the Hebrew calendar (360 day year), so we have to convert it to a Solar Year.
483 X .9857 (conversion factor) = 476 years.
444 BC is the stated beginning point of this timeline:
476 – 444 BC = 32 AD
Christ was crucified in the year 32 AD.
The fulfillment of prophecy verifies God’s word. There are several timelines in scripture that have accurately confirmed the times we are living in. Scripture not only proves its accuracy; it prepares us for what lies ahead.
The 70th week in vs. 27 will be my next topic. (click here)
Daniel 9:27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.
