Daniel’s 70th Week Ended In 1948 – by Gerald Preston

Most Bible scholars describe the following chapter as the coming 7 year Tribulation. A deep dive into the Hebrew text gives a much more accurate description.

Daniel 9:27: And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.”

This verse points to a time that is known as the 70th week. As I said most claim that it is speaking of a coming 7 year tribulation.

First of all it states “And he shall confirm the covenant with many” this covenant was already mentioned in vs. 25. In 444 BC King Artaxerxes made a covenant with the Jews to rebuild Jerusalem. Then in 536 BC King Cyrus confirmed the covenant. In the English it states that the covenant would be confirmed for 1 week. Bible scholars teach that one week is one day for each year. In most cases that is true. In this case however, the word for one week is translated from the word Shavua. A Shavua is a Jubilee year not just a week. It is defined in Leviticus 25:1-6
“And the Lord spake unto Moses on Mt Sinai saying, Speak unto the Children of Israel and say unto them, “When ye come into the land which I will give you, then shall the land keep a sabbath unto the Lord. Six years thou shalt sow thy field, and six years thou shalt prune thy vineyard, and gather in the fruit thereof; but in the seventh year shall be a sabbath of rest onto the land, a sabbath for the Lord: thou shalt neither sow thy field, or prune thy vineyard. That which groweth of its own accord of thy harvest thou shalt not reap, neither gather the grapes of thy vine undressed: for it is a year of rest unto the land. And the sabbath of the land shall be meat for you; for thee, and for thy servant, and for thy maid, and for thy hired servant, and for thy stranger that sojourneth with thee,”
Lev 25:7-8, “And for thy cattle, and for the beast that are in thy land, shall all the increase thereof be meat. And thou shalt, number seven sabbaths of years”.

Pastor Joseph Cortes explains as follows:

“Seven sabbaths of years. This is where the numerical progressions of sevens comes in. “And thou shalt number seven sabbaths of years unto thee, seven times seven years; and the space of the seven sabbaths of years shall be unto thee forty and nine years.” Get that? They were to number “seven sabbaths of years unto thee, seven times seven years; and the space of the seventh Sabbath of years shall be unto thee forty and nine years.”

Then we come to another very important identification of what the numerical progression of the Levitical Code in its completion means.

Leviticus 25:9-11 “Then shalt thou cause the trumpet of the jubilee to sound on the tenth day of the seventh month, in the Day of Atonement shall ye make the trumpet sound throughout all your land. And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof; it shall be a jubilee unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family. A jubilee shall that fiftieth year be unto you:”

Pastor Cortes elaborates further:

What does all that mean in Leviticus 25:1-11? It describes shavua. It describes sevens. Not just a seven- year, but a seven times seven, a 49-year of sevens. It also describes a fiftieth Jubilee year which is another whole ball game of sevens and I will show you that in a minute.
We have the Levitical code, as far as numbers go, but not all the numbers, just in regard to seven. We are looking at the numbers of seven here in Leviticus 25:1-11. Do you understand that? Let us just write it down.
First = one seven (a shavuim) of years.
Second = seven years (shavuim) of years.
Third = one unique Jubilee (shavua) year—and here is the catcher right here—with 360 Sabbaths.”

We now have a time line that starts with the covenant King Cyrus made with the Jews. It starts with 536 BC. A sabbatical year is 360 days. We still use “days = years” that never changes but now we have 7 sabbatical years. That is 7 X 360 = 2,520 years. That timeline then lasts from 536 BC until 2,520 Hebrew years later.

In order to properly chart the timeline we must use a conversion factor because our solar year is 365.24 days but a Hebrew year is 360.  Dividing 360 by 365.24 gives us our conversion factor of .9857.  Multiplying 2,520 years X .9857 = 2,484. If you add 2,484 years to 536 BC you get the year 1948.

What happened in 1948? Israel was re-established as a state, and the Jews began to return as God promised them.

The book of Daniel was written in two languages. Parts of it were written in Aramaic and the other parts were written in Hebrew. Daniel chapter 9 is written in Hebrew. This chapter is specifically meant for the Jews. It was given unto the Jews to re-establish Israel and Jerusalem. In error, Bible scholars translated this to mean one normal week. They then without any evidence go on to state that this is about a end time 7 year tribulation.
